Personal: My Life in 20 Questions

I never really introduced myself on this blog. I got kind of carried away with the sewing/fashion part of my blog, that I forgot to talk about a little bit about myself. I'd like to consider myself a private person, but I think it's always nice to get to know the person behind the screen. Being an avid blog reader, I find it fun to get an insight on other people' life.

That being said: Here is my get to know me tag!

1.) Age: Basically 21

2.) Sign: Virgo

3.) Height: 5'5'' ish

4.) Ethnicity: Somali

5.) Born & Raised?
  • Born: California
  • Raised: Minnesota
6.) Did I every visit Somalia?
- Sadly not yet! I do plan on visiting after graduation (I'A).

7.) Favorite Subject in School? - Science & History

8.) Something I want to learn? - To play the Piano and/or ballet dancing

9.) Favorite Quote:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?" - Marianne Williamson

10.) Current Song I play over and over? - Lost Boy by Ruth B.

11.) Why I started this Blog?

-- Long story short. I needed a place to share my ideas and a creative outlet to organize my ideas.

12.) When did I start sewing?

-- It's such a random story. But basically one day when I was around 16 years old, I was watching a YouTube video on how to make a chiffon skirt. After I watched it, I was like "Wow, I think I can make that". Keep in mind I never sewed a day in my life, other than middle school home economics class. The next day I went to the fabric store and bought a yard of fabric thinking it was enough to make a full skirt. Oh was I wrong. After many failed attempts of sewing projects, I continued to practice sewing because I was really interested in creating my own clothing (and also I was too stubborn to give up).

13.) Future Career Goal?

-- I want to become a Doctor. You may be confused at this point? and ask why not fashion? I pondered on that question for many years now.  My love for science and improving the human condition really draws me to becoming a physician. This doesn't mean I will not pursue fashion. I definitely want to continue exploring my creative side with fashion design. Who said I can't be a Doctor/Fashion Designer? (ha ha ha... don't burst my bubble.)

14.) Place to live? East Coast for sure. I'm looking into Boston or New York.

15.) Top 3 Favorite Movies? Okay, I'm kind of a sucker for Romance films

  • A Walk to Remember
  • The Notebook
  • Me Before You
16.) Top 3 Books? I'm not gonna lie to you, I don't read for pleasure very often... I know I need to change this. But from what I've read thus far here are my faves:
  • The Intern Blues by Robert Marion  - (Very depressing but interesting perspective on medicine)
  • Better by Atul Gawande
  • New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration by Michelle Alexander - (Not fully done reading, but so far so good!)
17.)  Favorite Blogs? Ahhh... so many to choose from. Here are my daily reads:
* Do you see a common theme?

18.) Why do I consider myself a Feminist?
-- Equality for ALL genders! We all deserve to be treated the same way. It bothers me that people have this perception of feminism as women who don't shave or run outside without a top on. Personally, I see it to be more than that and hopefully people can see that as well.
Here is a really good definition:
"The belief that women are and should be treated as potential intellectual equals and social equals to men. These people can be either male or female human beings, although the ideology is commonly (and perhaps falsely) associated mainly with women."

19.) Where do I see myself in 5 years?

-- Hmm... Tough one. Hopefully almost done with graduate school and doing something with fashion. (Allahu Alam)

20. What's next?

-- This summer has been an eye opener for me. I took the time to reflect on aspects of my life that I want to improve and change. My next move is to be a more consistent blogger. This is difficult because of how unpredictable life can be. My hope is to be more open on this blog and to let you get to know me a bit more. I will still blog about sewing and fashion but that's only one part of my life. I have more to share and I am excited for you all to see whats next!

This was fun to do! I hope you all enjoyed it. Let me know if you have any questions.
